I love Charles Baudelaire's comment (Manet was his friend): 'You are only the first in the imbelicity of your art.' Not one of Baudelaire's finest moments - but he could see that Manet was changing art forever.
I'm so glad I can comment! That picnic picture said it out loud, didnt it? What those decorous picnics in the Park were about, really. And that's not necessarily bad. Except you don't SAY SO! We have similar euphemism situations today, about other subjects maybe but the same result. Re Monet...never was a person more fortunate in Nominative Determinism, lol, not only did he gave a name that was near enough to someone already famous to give him a piggy back into the society consciousness but his name actually looks like and sounds like 'money',in English anyway!
Apologies for my rather facile and not about actual art technique comments. Its odd that now some of that work is dismissed by some as "pretty + chocolate box" images when they were actually painting REAL LIFE including the unloading of coal boats or a woman hanging out the washing. The fact is a lot of real life IS beautiful, the garden full of roses, that bit of the country lane not yet included in the housing development, your 3 year old daughter with her kitten. Being lovely isn't less real.
Cheers to you when you toast Manet. I found this very interesting.
Thank you! 😊
Excellent survey of Manet’s works and impact. Thanks so much!
Thank you for reading!
That was wonderful. I love Manet's paintings. His subjects weren't merely painted, they had a life of their own.
