It's always uplifting to read about people who are active in so many different fields. I believe Doyle's interest in medicine, botany, and sports helped him nurture his creativity. We should all pursue something new now and then and keep an open mind.

It's odd to think that my grandmother could have met him when she was old enough to have read his work - he seems like a much more distant figure.

Yes! I always imagine him in a Victorian library, smoking his pipe. But he lived to see films and hear jazz music!

And Thomas Hardy made it to 1928, which I find even harder to believe! ACD at least wrote 'modern' books in nineteenth-century terms.
