Your Impressionism series has been such a highlight for me on here this year, Nicole. And this was another brilliant edition.
If any gallery in the future decides to do a full retrospective on Mary, I feel like they could really learn a lot from you about how to show the deeper context in her work,
On the eve of the recent Presidential election I wrote a story about Cassatt and an art show her good friend Louisine Havemeyer staged to raise funds for the National American Women's Suffrage Organization. The story was written in anticipation of America electing its first woman President. Alas, what might have been. https://thearteproject.substack.com/p/when-art-changed-the-world. Thanks for the excellent look at Cassat's life.
Such a great article, Nicole! I saved this post a while ago on my desktop tab but for some reasons I missed it and only read it now. I enjoyed it very much as well as discovering Cassatt's revolutionary motherhood depictions which are so powerful. Thank you <3
We just saw the exhibition in San Francisco. It was wonderful! Thanks for the deep dive and the context.
I'm so jealous!! I hope you enjoyed the exhibit!
High time for Cassatt's time in the sun!
I agree!
Fascinating, Nicole. Without your context, these mother and child paintings can now seem mawkish and over-sentimental to today's eyes
Thank you so much for reading! And yes, context is key!

Thank you so much! That is so kind of you to say - I hope more institutions will highlight her work in the future!

Thank you so much for sharing this - I look forward to reading it!
At the same time Cassatt is at the Legion of Honor in SF, Tamara de Lempicka is at the DeYoung. A holiday 2-fer as we don our gal apparel.
That sounds amazing!! I hope you enjoy both of them
I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts and learning from you. You enrich my life. “Breakfast in Bed” is so lovely; I would like to meet that mother.
This made my day - thank you so much!

Thanks for sharing her story. Saw an exhibit of her works years ago in DC, but I didn’t know much about her life.
